I've been thinking about a carport.

Old photo, back when I owned the You-Know-What

I’m brainstorming goodly, economic solutions to my driveway/garage situation. I have a 1-car wide 0.75-car deep garage, on a 1-wide driveway. The garage needs a lot of work (roof, structure rotting in the back left corner, no insulation, etc.). Many modern cars do not fit in the garage. The loaner RX 350 was about 18" too long.

So here’s what I’m thinking: keep the left-hand side of the garage (not pictured, but it’s maybe 8' wide), repair it and make it an enclosed shop. Turn the bay part of the garage into a carport, extending the new roof even further to the right, making it 2-wide and knocking out the back wall to make it deeper (or build the face further forward? hmm...). This will be coupled with our plan to widen the driveway (RIP part of the front garden).

A R T !

My wrenching these days is limited to oil changes. I don’t need a garage. Would I prefer one? Well sure. Would I prefer something effectively as functional and potentially much cheaper? For this house, si. Si, senior. Also, hot take alert: I don’t hate carports [collective gasps]. What I really care about is having two spots for cars and a wider driveway.

That sounds awesome, but maybe keep or build a single bay for wrenching and ect?

I thought of that, I’m worried it might look too staggered and busy, vs being a planned double carport.

If it’s utility over looks I’d take utility. Although it may not be nessasary seeing as you only have one pre 00's car now do hopefully repairs would be less likely

That seems like a cool idea. I’d prefer a garage, but if it’s that small, the double carport would definitely be better.

Always remember, get a permit, and make sure you’re well within the setbacks of whatever zoning regs, if any, you are living under. My neighbors put a $3,000 shed in their back yard, and had to get a zoning variance because it was 6" too close to the neighbors yard. And yes, the neighbors, who are MASSIVE dicks, complained.

A dual carport setup sounds better than one non-usable garage, especially if you have an enclosed workshop space, too. That said, I’d end up somehow contorting it into some sort of 28x36 monstrosity of a garage, since that’s pretty much what I do. My garage is 24x24 and I want to add a 28x40 section on the back of it with some more doors. I have a problem. Send help.

That’s a tough call... I don’t know if I would give up the enclosed garage. You won’t be able to keep anything in a carport except for a car (Nothing you’d be upset over losing anyway).

My garage is full of shit anyway, and a tightly parked Lexus. If anything a carport will deter the acquisition of more useless shit.

Coincidentally, he has lots of parking space and only owns one car. Sad!

Do you see snow of any measurable amount (3 inches or so minimum accumulation)?

If not, then carport.

Holy shit I really hate Kinja and can’t delete the picture because I guess I should cover the plate since I plan on taking to over the world.

Would you mind terribly just dismissing my comments so that they disappear forever?

If you’re going to tear the garage down and build a double carport, I would recommend spending a bit more money and making it a garage. In the grand scheme of things they aren’t that much more expensive, but they are much more valuable.

Either way, if you’re adding depth to the structure, send it backwards not forwards. It’ll look better and preserve precious parking area.

If you’re not going to be wrenching and you don’t need the enclosed space for storage, I don’t see an issue with a carport. Keeps sun and weather off your car, which is all you really need out of a home parking spot.

They’re pretty popular in my area, and if I had the space I would consider adding one to the side of my garage so my DD would have a place out of the rain.

can’t you just add a car port on the side of the garage where that white gondola is?

i mean keep the garage as is, and add a one car carport to the side.
